As I sat down at the computer this week I didn’t want to be there. I didn’t feel creative, I was tired, and if I’m really honest with you, I was struggling with imposter syndrome. It didn’t help that my day job had been kicking my butt and when you add all of that up it didn’t add up to a creative studio session.
Driving home I came up with every excuse to not spend time creating. I felt it was going to be a waste of my time and anyone else’s time who decided to join the live stream. “It’s not worth it,” I thought. “Just give in and no one will know the difference.” But then I had the thought that forced me to show up. Art is powerful, isn’t it? It can give hope to the hopeless and meaning to the mundane. As artists, I believe that it is of utmost importance that we take what we do seriously. It’s time for a to call to arms.
I’m not much to talk politics or to give you my unsolicited opinion but I think we can all agree that we are living in a very interesting time. One filled with fear, hate, and disunity. This is where the artists need to come in. I truly believe that it’s our job (and a very important one) to rise up and begin to speak through our creative expression. (more…)
Creative living can be a very difficult and frustrating endeavor. Some days we feel like we know exactly what to do, while other days we want to throw it all in swearing to never pick it up again. I’m pretty sure this happens to me on a monthly basis, but whenever I get to the edge of giving up I’m always thrown a lifeline. That’s exactly what happened last week.
Last week I had the privilege of watching some of my good friend in Veseria release their much-anticipated new album. For weeks they told us that it was an experience they couldn’t wait to share with us, and man did they not disappoint. From the first note to the last they allowed their art to shine and I have to say…it was inspiring. (more…)
Stepping into this week’s session I knew that I needed to get the track completely outlined and then start adding the necessary pieces to set it off. I wasn’t exactly sure how it was going to come together, but I was excited to see what happened.
Once I was live I spend some time finishing the outline for the track. Decided on verse length, repeated choruses, and how I wanted the bridge to flow. Once I did that I was ready to really make the magic happen. (more…)
This week during the session I started a completely new track. I came in only knowing that I wanted to create something based on a drum track I heard in an Alt-J song I was listening to last week. I wasn’t really sure if I would come out with anything worth while, but I was pleasantly surprised by what happened.
My goal was to complete the song outline by the end of the session. What I mean by that is lay out the intro, verse, chorus, and bridge progression (on keys or guitar) and copy and paste the sections until the track has a backbone to it. Although I didn’t completely get that done I was very happy with the intro and verse vibe that I was able to get down. (more…)
Sometimes you just have to keep pushing forward. That is the essence of this track; perseverance. There were times when I felt I needed to abandon this one, but sometimes you just need to refuse to give up. This was one of those times! Here’s to another successful episode of Studio FB Live.
Before I went live I spend some time addressing some drum issues I was having. The hi-hat just wasn’t right. After what felt like a thousand attempts I simply deleted it and who knew, that was exactly what it needed. Once the drums felt a little better I doubled the electric guitar part to bring in some more pop. I really like how it landed. From there it was time to start the live session. (more…)
As I sat down and pressed the “go live” button I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had an idea of what I wanted to accomplish, but would it pan out? There were some good moments and some really frustrating moments, but at the end of the day I sat down and created something.
Thursday on Studio FB Live, Episode 001, I continued working on a track currently titled “The Grind.” It’s an electro-blues track trying to tell the story of the ups and downs of life. The grind if you will. (more…)
Sometimes you have to try new things. To throw ideas against the wall and see what sticks. It’s been a while since my last post, but I’m excited about how I’m going to try and move this forward. I’m not totally sure where this is going or how it will pan out, but let’s go for it anyway.
Last week I tried FB live for the first time. My goal was to play a track from my upcoming album, but more than that it was to see if I could actually push the live button and go for it. I did it so I’ll take that as a success for now. The response to the track was overwhelming and I was blown away by all the comments, likes, and shares. (more…)
As I stepped into 2017 I made a commitment to myself that I was going to post a new track every week for the first two months of the year. It was time to create again. I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it, I just knew it was a challenge I needed to take on. Last week marked the end of my goal and I am excited to say I accomplished what I set out to do.
Many of you followed my journey over the past few weeks and I can’t say thank you enough for the encouragement and support you have given me. The emails, texts, comments, and conversations have left me speechless. I’m truly inspired by you. (more…)
You don’t have to be around very long to be confronted with the reality that life can (and will be) difficult. We all have struggles that set us back and haunt us longer than we would like to admit.
Over this past year, I have been really intentional about working on me. One of my main focuses was on my self-talk after I began to realize how hard I was on me. After listening to my own negativity I knew that I needed to do something about it.
